Modern day web browsers allow opening or viewing several types of files without having to install an extension. However, the support list doesn’t include MS Office files like Word, Excel and Powerpoint.

Chrome too, doesn’t support default viewing of .doc, .docx, .xls, .xlsx, .ppt, .pptx files, and starts downloading them straight – that annoys a lot.

Opening MS Office documents, spreadsheets and presentations straight on your Chrome also comes in handy when you don’t have MS Office installed on your computer.

Extensions to view / Open MS Office files on Chrome

In order to accomplish viewing of Office files on Chrome, one may install extensions to get the files supported on your browser. Instead of installing many extensions, I know some cool ones that lets you view all the three type: Word, Excel and Powerpoint files in Chrome.

Chrome Office

Chrome Office is first in the list – just install it and start viewing office files right in your browser window. However it has stopped working for me from the past few days. Install it using the below link, if the same is happening to you too, take a look at the next.

Docs PDF/PowerPoint Viewer

Powered by Google, this extension is more stable to view office files on Chrome. Besides office files, it also makes PDF viewable on Chrome. If Chrome still keeps downloading files, you can view file by right clicking the file link and click “View file in new Tab”.

Will add more extensions if I find more. Hope you saved some of your precious time!
